Breath!
A Spam Filtering Solution for E-mail Client Programs
Breath! is a simple and cost-effective solution for removing spam from incoming mail. It eliminates the most of the spam effectively by using the power of DNSBL lists and SpamAssassin.
As everybody already knows, unsolicited bulk e-mail (spam) is a big threat against e-mail as a communication channel. As a consequence of this fact, there have been developed many (too many!) solutions to cope with the spam. DNSBL lists and SpamAssassin are highly-effective and popular anti-spam solutions which are used mainly at the network borders of organizations. Breath! brings those two very competent anti-spam technologies to your personal PC for fighting spam.
Breath! in trial mode is available for download here. It filters only half of the spam you receive. If you would like to use Breath! on a permanent basis with full functionality, you have to buy a user license ($15) with following benefits :

How to install Breath!?
Supported platforms are Windows 2000/XP/2003 and POP3 e-mail clients.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license agreement if you agree.
- Specify an installation location.
- Installation starts. It might be necessary to instruct your firewall to allow network connections from the Breath service.
- Read the instructions at the finish page.
Breath! is now installed on your machine as a service and an application for administration and monitoring is also available from the system tray. All you have to do now is to configure your e-mail client:
- Update account settings:
Go to your e-mail client's account configuration and select the account you want to activate Breath! for. It's recommended that Breath! is activated for all accounts. In the user name field, add your POP3 server name preceded by a _%_.
Outlook example: If your user name is myuser and your POP3 server is myserver.com, your user name field must now contain myuser_%_myserver.com. You must also replace the value in your POP3 server field by localhost:
- Define a rule for handling of spam messages:
Spam messages catched by Breath! will have a subject starting with *** BREATH! tag. You can simply define a rule which moves those mails to a folder for further investigation. An Outlook example:
Usage
When your e-mail client is configured properly and the Breath service is running, an incoming mail will be checked against two DNSBL providers which are randomly selected from a provider pool (Spamhaus, UCE Protect, CBL and Spamcop). If it passes, links in the message will be verified against DNSBL lists from Surbl and Uribl. If the message is still alive(!), it will then be examined by the SpamAssassin local checks. Subject field of a spam message will be updated with a tag before delivery to the mail client.
Breath! comes with a system tray application for simple administration and monitoring. It can start/stop the service and display some statistics. Please remember that you will not get any new e-mail if the service is stopped. You can start the tray application from the start menu.
